Properties and characteristics of traditional timber connections in Northeast Asia
Korea Forest Research Institute (Korea)
Traditional timber connections in Korea, China and Japan are different from modern timber connections with metal connectors. Traditional timber connections transfer dead and live load of timber construction effectively through complex load path between structural members of timber construction without metal connectors. The details of the connections are complicated shape but successfully resist vertical and horizontal load of timber construction. Due to the complicated details of connections, manufacturing the traditional connections requires highly skilled labor and working hours. The mini-symposia will introduce various types of traditional timber connections in the Northeast Asia and will have fruitful discussion on innovative timber connections including improvement of quality and reduce manufacturing cost of the connections for modernized timber constructions.
